OTF vs. TTF – What are they, and how do they work?

TTF and OTF are font file extensions used to indicate that the file is a font used in formatting the documents for printing. TTF stands for TrueType Font, a relatively older font, while OTF stands for OpenType Font, which was based partly on the TrueType standard.

OTF fonts rely on both glyphs and CCF (Compact Font Format) tables that describe the look of each character. However, TTF relies entirely on glyph tables that define how each character appears. As a result, the TTF files are, in general, larger in size, easier to make, and much more popular than OTF files. Check out the difference between Affinity Photo vs Photoshop.

To put it nicely, Opentype fonts are better when you design materials for print, and a TTF font file is the better choice when you will use it mainly for web design or mobile design on desktop or mobile displays.
